The Daily Design #01

This is the first edition of the Daily Design! Every day from now on (okay, well, life is hectic so not every day), I will post one of my previous or recent graphic designs with a little bit of commentary. Let’s get started!

Title: VectorLabs thumbnail

Date: September 10, 2019

Fonts: Modified Avenir Black

Story: I used to use a graphical programming/social media website called Scratch. There was a user called VectorLabs that requested a branding thumbnail and this is what I came up with.

Principles: The most strikingly obvious design principle here is contrast. I achieved this in two ways: First, I used a shade of magenta and pure white as the colors. This creates a very vivid effect that easily attracts the viewer. However, this design would not scale very well, because that much pink... it just hurts. The second way I created contrast was using the intersection Boolean, which you can clearly see in the O of Vector. It also helps create the illusion of balance between the left and right sides of the design, which would be difficult to achieve otherwise because of the stark difference between the magenta and the white.
